The Los Angeles production of Wicked has transferred to the Bay Area city, but casting has not been set. The Los Angeles production opened in February 2007 and grossed over $1.9 million during the week ending December 30, 2007. There's no place like home! Wicked San Francisco is returning to its home January 27, 2009 at the Orpheum Theatre. A homecoming celebration to welcome Wicked San Francisco took place September 26, 2008 in its excitement. San Francisco, California has been wickedly blessed to have been home to the Broadway production Wicked since its inception on May 28, 2003. Wicked and San Francisco have enjoyed a lengthy relationship that will continue beautifully.

Wicked San Francisco included cast members Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda the Good Witch, former 'Rent' star Idina Menzel as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Robert Morse as The Wizard of Oz. Designer Eugene Lee designed the set and style based on the W.W. Denslow's original illustrations in L. Frank Baum's classic story
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Costume designer Susan Hilferty created more than 200 costumes, and more than 800 lights were designed by lighting designer Kenneth Posner to set the mood. The first run of Wicked only lasted about 4 weeks, but the effort, imagination and work were well worth the impact Wicked has had on the world since 2003.
Wicked San Francisco tells the story of Oz from the perspective of two witches – Elphaba, the soon-to-be Wicked Witch of the West and her friendship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Their relationship has its challenges and failings. The plot is based on what occurred before Dorothy arrived from Kansas. Throughout the Wicked San Francisco production, the scenes and narrative were based on the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.
