Since its debut in London in 1999,
Mamma Mia! has been pleasing audiences with its storyline and music. The music comes from the popular Swedish dance group ABBA. ABBA had a number of hits from 1972 to 1982. The producer of the musical, Judy Craymer, took notice of the songs and thought that perhaps they would make a great musical production. After meeting two of the songwriters from ABBA in 1983, Mamma Mia! was on its way.
Oh Mamma!
The hysterics behind
Mamma Mia! is the storyline, to which many women can relate. Getting married is a wonderful and exciting time in a woman's life. It's likely that most women dream of having their father walk them down the aisle when they get married.
Mamma Mia! tells the story of a young woman's journey to find exactly who her father is.
In
Mamma Mia!, Donna is the single mother who lives and works on a Greek island running a small hotel. Her 20-year-old daughter, Sophie, is a young spirited woman who is about to get married to her fiancée Sky. Like most women, she wants her father to walk her down the aisle. After some snooping, Sophie finds her mom's diary and discovers that Donna had three quite intimate dates with three men. She thinks one must be her dad. Sophie's best friends Rosie, the practical and no-nonsense one, and the multi-divorced Tonya are there to support her. Sophie has a secret though. She invited those three men from her mom's past three months before the wedding without telling her mother. Sophie believes that one of those men is her father.
Mamma Mia! then tells the story of the day before the wedding when the three men show up and Donna is shocked to see them. There's Sam, the American architect, Harry, the British banker and an Australian writer named Bill. Sophie pleads with them not to tell Donna that she invited them. Mamma Mia! then goes back and forth between the three men, Sophie's pleas to know her father, but not upset her mother, and Donna's anguish over seeing her ex-lovers (and their spouses). Mamma Mia! is truly funny and full of drama. It's a pleasing love story that wrestling with love, friendship and laughter. Mamma Mia! is a great stress reliever and an all-around great time.
