Dallas Stars History
The Dallas Stars were originally based out of Bloomington, Minnesota when the team was founded in 1967 as a part of a major expansion to the NHL. The Minnesota North Stars struggled out of the gate, which prompted them to lose money, change ownership, and be merged with other hockey clubs. However, following a merger with the Cleveland Barons, the North Stars turned their fortunes around in 1981 making their first appearance in a Stanley Cup final.
The 1980's signified a dramatic change for this organization as they would turn the corner in both the win column and profitability. For this reason, ownership tried to move the team twice, first to San Jose and then Anaheim. They dropped the "North" from their name in 1991 signaling to fans that a move was going to happen. It finally did occur when Roger Staubach convinced ownership that Dallas could support an NHL team and the club was moved here in 1993.
After the move, the Dallas Stars took the decent team they had built in Minnesota and expanded upon its roster. Under Head Coach Ken Hitchcock, the new Dallas Stars added talented players like Darien Hatcher and Brett Hull to their lineup. These players teamed up with Mike Modano brought home the hardware that is the Lord Stanley's Cup in 1999, ending the void of championships for this franchise. They would make it back to the Stanley Cup in 2000, but would be bested by the New Jersey Devils in six games.
