Alliance Bank Stadium
is an 11,117-seat minor league baseball stadium in Syracuse, New York. The stadium opened on April 10, 1997, and is home to the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The field's dimensions are to left field, to center field, and to right field. The stadium used to have AstroTurf, but was removed after the Chiefs' 2007 season in favor of natural grass. [1]
The Chiefs' former parent organization (the Blue Jays) is the main reason why the stadium used to have AstroTurf. The Blue Jays wished to accustom their prospects to the same kind of playing surface as Rogers Centre in Toronto. However, Rogers Centre now uses FieldTurf, which better resembles real grass than AstroTurf.
The former soccer club Syracuse Salty Dogs also called the stadium home. Though they were very popular with fans and had very high attendance, their relationships with the Chiefs and Onondaga County were not great. There are groups looking to bring a new soccer club to come to Syracuse in the near future, with the hope that they won't have to share the stadium.
Until 2005, it was known as P&C Stadium
, a name derived from P&C Foods, the regional brand of supermarkets run by Syracuse-based Penn Traffic Corporation. In September 2004, Penn Traffic was released from their naming rights contract due to their bankruptcy. Alliance Bank is a regional bank headquartered in Syracuse.
