Double Door
is a concert hall and nightclub located at 1572 N. Milwaukee Avenue, in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. This venue was first opened on June 12, 1994 and is co-owned by Andy Barrett, Sean Mulroney and Joe Shanahan. On June 12, 1994, under its current ownership, the Double Door hosted its first show, Lloyd Cole; the same week, the Smashing Pumpkins played under the name the Starchildren. [1] This venue hosts a capacity of 473 people. It is two floors, has a stage, separate soundboards for both main and monitor speakers, a dance floor and a bar. Pool tables and a bar are located downstairs.
Artists who have played Double Door include local acts Emilie Autumn, The Smashing Pumpkins, Local H, Chevelle, Veruca Salt, Wilco, Liz Phair, and Cheap Trick, as well as a number of national and international talents, including The Rolling Stones. Double Door also hosted such events as MOB fest, television show and movie filmings, and events sponsored by ASCAP, Maverick Records, MTV, VH1, Rolling Stone
magazine and among others. [2]
Parts of the movie High Fidelity were shot at Double Door, and the characters in the movie visit there. [3]
In 2005, the club was nearly shut down due to disagreements about its lease. Music community pressure through online petitions and appearances in court resulted in the landlord backing down and renewing the lease. [4]
