History
In
1898 the
Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) was formed. It was a very popular club and it gained 700 members in only four years. The director of the club's athletic program was
John Heisman, the famous football coach who the
Heisman Trophy is named after. In
1904 the AAC bought property to build a country club which included a golf course. Course architect
Tom Bendelow was asked to lay out the course.
In
1906 the course's first holes were built. It was initially only seven holes, then nine and in the summer of
1907 the course was expanded to 17 holes. Later on in 1907 the 18th hole was built to make it a full 18 hole course. Also in 1907, the first significant tournament was hosted at East Lake, the
Southern Amateur. It was won by
Nelson Whitney. In
1908,
Tom Bendelow opened his "No. 2" course at East Lake.
The course's recognized establishment date is
1913. In 1913, famous
golf course architect Donald Ross completely redesigned the course. He was called in by members to make the course a championship course.
Later in
1966 the AAC sold the course to developers who moved it to its present home in
Duluth, Georgia. A few years later in
1968, East Lake Country Club was formed. A group of members purchased the clubhouse and course and started operating the East Lake Country Club.
In
1994, famous architect
Rees Jones restored
Donald Ross' original golf course layout and that is what East Lake looks like today.
