The North Charleston Coliseum
is a 14,000-seat multi-purpose arena in North Charleston, South Carolina, part of the North Charleston Coliseum, Performing Arts Center, and Convention Center complex built in 1993 (the Performing Arts Center and Convention Center opened in 1999) located on the access road to Charleston International Airport.
It is home to the South Carolina Stingrays Ice hockey team and the Carolina Sandsharks indoor football team with a capacity of 10,568 for these two sports, and has been the home of larger basketball matches with the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University (the Buccaneers use the venue for larger non-conference home games because the Buccaneers' home arena seats only 750), especially if a mid-major or a major conference team's home arena is smaller than this arena), and has been the site of the Big South Conference (1993-94) and Southern Conference basketball tournaments.
The venue has hosted Professional Wrestling featuring the eighth World Wrestling Federation In Your House pay-per-view in 1996 as well as WCW Uncensored in 1997.
Steve Barlstein, then a sports anchor at WCIV, referred to the venue as the Casa del Ray, as did his backup, Dean Stephens, now the WCIV news anchor.
The arena contains a special banner for former Stingray Mark Bavis, whose #12 is retired in a special corner of the arena, unlike the Stingrays' other retired numbers (#14 Dave Seitz and #24 Brett Marietti). Bavis was killed by Al Qaeda terrorists on United Airlines Flight 175 on September 11, 2001.
The Coliseum/Convention Center complex has been used in recent years for television. In 2006, the Convention Center was used for a few weeks of taping for Wheel of Fortune. In the summer of 2007, the arena was picked as one of the seven audition arenas for the seventh season of American Idol.
