Pikes Peak International Raceway Wiki Information
Pikes Peak International Raceway
, also known as PPIR
, is a racetrack located in Fountain, Colorado, south of Colorado Springs and north of Pueblo. Before its closure in 2005, the track hosted races in several series including the Indy Racing League and NASCAR's Busch (now Nationwide) Series and Craftsman Truck Series.
In addition to its one-mile, D-shaped oval, the infield forms part of a 1.3-mile road course. Its grandstand capacity is 42,000, with a further 20,000 able to be seated in the infield for road races.
On September 30, 2005, it was announced that the track had been bought by the International Speedway Corporation. ISC shut the facility down in November of that year and petitioned NASCAR to move the track's Busch Series date to Martinsville Speedway for 2006.
It was announced on July 24, 2008 that the track will reopen under new ownership with a concentration on participant motorsports events. The new owner plans further announcements over the next few months about its future plans for PPIR.
The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) has scheduled the first event at the re-opened PPIR for the Labor Day 2008 weekend.
