The Walter Kerr Theatre was built in 1921 as the Ritz Theatre by the Shuberts in a record 60 days. It seats 975, and is located at 219 W. 48th Street. Though it has had many uses since its construction, it was converted back to legitimate theatre in 1989. In 1990, it was named after theatre critic Walter Kerr, and since then, it has housed six winners of the Tony Award for Best Play: Doubt , Take Me Out , Proof , Love! Valour! Compassion! , Angels in America: Perestroika and Angels in America: Millennium Approaches . Other notable productions include August Wilson's The Piano Lesson and Gem of the Ocean . The musical Grey Gardens , based on the documentary, ran during the 2006-2007 season with the two female leads winning Tony awards. A new musical A Catered Affair opened on April 17, 2008. A Catered Affair has a book by Harvey Fierstein and score by John Bucchino and stars Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, Matt Cavenaugh and Leslie Kritzer. On June 19, 2008, the producers of the musical issued a press release announcing the show will close on July 29, 2008, having played 27 previews and 116 regular performances. In October, 2008, a revival of the Anton Chekhov play The Seagull will open.
