History
After forming in early 2008, and
writing ten songs in their first
rehearsal session,
[3] the band played its first gig at a friends' house party in
New Cross on May 10 2008.
[4] After performing fourteen live shows, they were asked by
BBC DJ Steve Lamacq to feature on the
BBC Introducing stage at the
Electric Proms in October 2008.
[5] Their name comes from a character in the
Brendan Behan book
Borstal Boy
.
[6]
Music
Chew Lips has been described as "minimal dance-pop" and "coupling techno beats with smart-mouthed edgy vocals", influenced by
LCD Soundsystem and
Prince [7] and "Classic Pop",
[4].
The Guardian said they "haven't yet mastered the killer hook or knockout chorus,"
but
NME say "They've been together barely 12 months, but they've already got the capital in their pockets and have (in 'Solo') produced one of the most exciting singles of the year."
The Fly magazine, in reviewing the
Solo
single, said that Chew Lips made "electronic pop that will get wedged in your brain from first listen"
