Emma Rose Roberts [1] (born February 10, 1991) [2] is an American actress, singer-songwriter, spokesperson, intrumentalist and designer. She is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and the niece of actress Julia Roberts.

Emma Roberts rose to prominence for her lead role as Addie Singer in the Nickelodeon television series Unfabulous , a role for which Roberts garnered various awards and critical acclaim. [3] Following the success of the show in September 2005, she released her debut album, which also served as the show's soundtrack Unfabulous and More . Roberts then pursued a solo singing career by recording two songs for the soundtracks of Ice Princess and Aquamarine (in which Roberts starred as one of the leads). Roberts then began to focus on her acting career, the title character in the 2007 film Nancy Drew , and her voice-over debut in The Flight Before Christmas .

In 2008 and 2009 Roberts began to star in coming-of-age and young adult roles, including Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac and Lymelife . Roberts appeared in the 2009 family film Hotel For Dogs and The Winning Season . As of May 2009, Roberts' upcoming films include the drama/thriller Twelve [4] and the horror film Grimm . [5] Roberts also signed onto star in Rodeo Girl [6] and the Nancy Drew sequel, [7] but both films have recently been put on hold and have not entered production. [8]

Early life

Roberts was born in Rhinebeck, New York, USA. [9] She is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts (who was born in Biloxi, Mississippi but raised in Atlanta, Georgia) and his then girlfriend Kelly Cunningham. [10] Roberts is the stepdaughter of Eliza Roberts. Roberts has two stepsisters, Morgan Simons and Keaton Simons. [11] She is the niece of actresses Julia Roberts and Lisa Roberts Gillan. [12] Roberts said in an interview, "I've just always wanted to act. Ever since I was really little I've wanted to do it. But my mom didn't want to get me into it too young. So, it's just been something I've always wanted to do." [13]

Acting career

2001-2003: Early career

During her childhood, Roberts spent a lot of time on the sets of the films in which her aunt Julia Roberts was starring. These experiences sparked a desire in Roberts, from the age of five, to follow her father and aunts into the film industry. Roberts said in an interview that: "Well I’ve been on sets since I was a little kid, and I’ve grown up around it and its something I’ve always wanted to do so it seemed pretty natural to me." Although her mother initially wanted her to have a normal childhood, Emma Roberts made her acting debut at age nine in Ted Demme's 2001 drama Blow . It was the first movie for which she ever auditioned. In the film she portrayed Kristina Jung, the daughter of Johnny Depp's character, cocaine smuggler George Jung. As the film is rated R, her mother reportedly would not allow Roberts to see it before she turned eighteen. Director Ted Demme produced a tape for her that featured only the scenes in which she appeared. [14]

In 2001, Roberts also had a role in Leif Tilden's 10-minute short "bigLove" (which also starred her future stepfather, Kelly Nickels), and was an uncredited extra in some scenes featuring her aunt Julia Roberts in America's Sweethearts . [15]

She went on to appear in smaller roles in two family films: in 2002's Grand Champion , as the sister of the main character Buddy (Jacob Fisher); and in 2003's Spymate , as the kidnapped daughter of former secret agent Mike Muggins (Chris Potter), who tries to rescue her with the help of a spy monkey. Grand Champion had a brief theatrical release in August 2004, [16] while Spymate was not released until February 2006, when it was given a theatrical run in Canada, [17] followed by its DVD release in April 2006. In August 2003,

Roberts was scheduled to shoot an independent film called Daisy Winters , starring as the title character, alongside Rachel Weisz. [18] However, the film, which would have been Roberts' first leading role, never began shooting due to financial problems.

2004-2005: Unfabulous

Roberts became a teen idol at the age of thirteen, starring as the lead character Addie Singer in the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous , which debuted in September 2004. Nickelodeon had wanted to cast her for the role from the beginning, and the teen sitcom earned Roberts a Teen Choice Award nomination and several Young Artist Award nominations. [19] The series became the network's most-watched programs [20] and was quickly recommissioned for a second season. The television show was also one of the most-watched programs in the United States among children between the age of 9 and 14. [21] The show aired for three seasons from 2004-2007 and aired 42 episodes. [22] The third season ended on December 16, 2007.

The television series focused on Addie Singer (Roberts) a seventh grader who's life is "unfabulous" and she writes songs about her life, Addie relys on her friends Geena Fabiono (Malese Jow) and Zack (Jordan Calloway). [23] The television series had had various TV Movies which include: The Perfect Moment which premiered on Nickelodeon on October 6, 2006. The TV Movie centers on Addie trying to tell Jake how she feels about him so she travels to China Town with Geena and Zack to get to the wedding that Jake is at. The second TV Movie premiered on December 16, 2007 The Best Trip Ever centers on Addie's prom and how tries to stop Geena and Zack from becoming a couple, thou Addie's boyfriend Jake is trying to get them together which causes conflicts between the four friends.

In 2004 Roberts guest-starred in an episode of another popular Nickelodeon series Drake and Josh, Roberts was in the episode "Honor Council" where she played Addie a judge in a trial to see if Drake should be found guilty of putting his teachers car in the classroom and should be suspended of all school activity's for the year. Because her character on Unfabulous writes songs and plays guitar, Nickelodeon soon considered a career in music for Roberts as well, following the lead of other actress'/pop singers such as Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan. [24]

Roberts said that one of the things she enjoys about Unfabulous is: "It's just so much fun. Everyone, like me and the kids and everyone, all get along and we're all really good friends. Also I get to pick out a lot of my own clothes on the show which is really fun. Roberts also said of the show that one of her favorite episodes is: "I do. I really had a lot of fun filming the episode where Addie directs the school play. It kind of turns into a disaster and she gets stressed out. It's just a really funny episode, I liked it a lot. I had fun."

2006-2008: Aquamarine and Nancy Drew

In 2006, Roberts returned to the big screen, starring alongside Sara Paxton and singer JoJo in Aquamarine . They became good friends while filming. The film is about two teenagers - Claire(Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo) who find a mermaid Aquamarine (Paxton), who tells them that if they can help her find true love - so that she can prove that it does exist to her family back home and to avoid having an arranged marriage that she'll grant them a wish, which Claire and Hailey agree to(Claire and Hailey agree, so that they can use the wish so that Hailey wont have to move away with her mother). Roberts won a 2007 Young Artist Award for Best Supporting Young Actress in a Feature Film for her role as claire in the film. [25] The film Aquamarine took #5 place at the box office on its opening weekend making 8 million [26] and the film to-date has grossed over 23 million worldwide. Additionally the film has grossed 42 million dollars in DVD rentals and DVD sales. The budget was $12 million. [27]

Following Aquamarine , she was scheduled to star in Camp Couture (produced by her mother, Kelly Cunningham) [28] and Bras and Broomsticks (based on the book of the same name by Sarah Mlynowski), [29] but neither film went into full production. [30] In early 2006, Roberts finished shooting her title role in Nancy Drew . The film Nancy Drew was filmed in various locations in California, which include South Pasadena, Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Long Beach, and Burbank. [31] The film was released to theaters on June 15, 2007. The film grossed over 7 million in its opening weekend and has to-date grossed over 30 million worldwide. [32] Thou the film was not well received by critics, the film currently holds a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54% on Metacritic. [33]

Roberts said of playing the character Nancy Drew: "Yeah, if I make something appeals to me it's kind of challenging, but I mean I read the Nancy Drew script and I loved it. I loved the character, and the whole idea." [34] Roberts also of the film, "Nancy Drew was created in like the 30s so she's very old. But in the movie her character stays basically the same as she was in book, but they just updated the story kind of around her." Roberts also said of doing a mystery film that: "Yeah, I love mysteries and I love the whole detective idea and I think it's so fun. " Roberts also related to the character by saying: "Oh I mean we're both ambitious and determined and also very curious but I mean she's much more of a neat freak than I am." The film was released on DVD on March 11, 2008.

On May 15, 2006, Roberts was featured on MTV's Punk'd with pop singer Teddy Geiger. In December 2007 Roberts began filming Hotel For Dogs in various parts of Los Angeles, California. In 2008 Roberts had her voiceover debut when she voiced the English version of the character Wilma in the CGI-animated holiday family film The Flight Before Christmas . [35] Roberts starred alongside comedian Norm Macdonald. The film was released direct-to-dvd in the U.S. on October 28, 2008. Roberts said of her role in the film that: "It’s an animated movie, which is great because I’ve never done voice-over work. For this it was just me reading with myself, which is funny because as an actor, I’m used to working with other people. I do the voice for a little, white ferret named Wilma. She’s very sassy and one of the characters that Niko the reindeer meets during his search for his father—he thinks his dad might be one of Santa’s reindeer. It’s a really fun movie, and I actually got to sing in it." [36] [37] Roberts also starred in Spymate as Amelia Muggins, the daughter of the lead character. The film was released in Canada in a thearetical run in 2006 and was later released direct-to-dvd in the US on Aril 11 2006 [38]

2009-present: Hotel For Dogs and Lymelife

In 2009, Roberts starred alongside Jake T. Austin in Hotel for Dogs , [39] based on the novel by Lois Duncan. The film Hotel For Dogs center around Andi and her younger brother Bruce (Jake T. Austin) trying to find homes for local stray dogs they find in their neighborhood with the help of their friends. The film premiered at The Pacific Theater in Los Angeles, California on January 15, 2009. The film was released to theaters on January 16, 2009 and took #5 place in its opening weekend with over 17 million. The film has to-date grossed over 114 million dollars at the box office and received generally mixed reviews from critics, and the film currently holds a 45% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. [40] [41] was released on DVD April 28, 2009. [42]

Roberts starred as the lead in the movie Wild Child , [43] about a rebellious teen from Malibu sent to a boarding school in England. The movie ended production in late 2007, and was released on August 15, 2008 in the United Kingdom. The movie will be released in the U.S. on May 9, 2009. [44] Emma described her character as “pretty much your typical spoiled-brat Malibu socialite who gets shipped off to British boarding school.” [45] Roberts also described the film and her character as being: It’s about a Malibu princess who isn’t getting along with her dad so well because she behaves pretty badly, so he ships her off to boarding school in England. It’s a very cute story and I am so excited because I get to shoot in London all summer. [46]

Roberts also said of the reason why she chose to play Poppy in Wild Child is that: "I love the movies like Mean Girls and Clueless and this really reminded me of that and I’d never really played a character like that before – I always played like the girl next door, so it was cool to get to play someone completely different." [47] Roberts also said of the character that: "I'm playing a bad, mean girl who's at a boarding school in England", also that "the character is very sassy and I can sometimes get sassy a little bit."

Roberts will also appear in the indie movie Lymelife with Alec Baldwin, which was premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, on September 8, and was later screened at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Roberts said that Lymelife is “kind of like American Beauty meets The Ice Storm.” In the Teen Vogue April 2009 issue, she explains her reasoning for doing the film, “Some people look at me and think, She’s just Julia Roberts’s niece. So I wanted to do something smaller and edgier, something that would show I really am an actress.”

Roberts also described her character in Lymelife and said of her:
Adrianna really is your typical girl. I think everyone knew an Adrianna type of girl growing up, and I could relate to her just because I remember being at her age, like fifteen, sixteen, where you're kind of frustrated because you don't know if you want to be older or if you have to act your age, or if you're supposed to act sexy or cute or what. I could definitely relate to that aspect of her. Roberts also said that she chose to do the role because: "I had just finished Hotel for Dogs , and I wanted to do something just completely different. So the script [for Lymelife ] kind of just came out of nowhere, and I read it and I really liked it. I met Derick and I really, really liked him. For the most part the cast was set, and I thought the cast they had chosen was brilliant. It was something I really wanted to be a part of; when you want to be a part of something like that, you'll do whatever they want you to do.


Roberts also said: "I just really loved the material, and I loved the people that were involved with the script, and I just really wanted to be a part of it. I'm 18 now, so I think that it's appropriate and time to do something more mature." [48]

Roberts said in a interview with Vanity Fair that: I’d love to do another role similar to my character in Lymelife, just because it was such a fun character to get to play with. I’d love to do a thriller, and I’d love to do a role like Kate Hudson’s in Almost Famous, because that’s my favorite movie. I just want to keep trying new things. I want to constantly be surprising people with different roles. [49] Roberts has also said that she'd: "Yeah, I’d love to do more. I want to do a movie like The Royal Tenenbaums because I watched it for the millionth time last night and realized how much I love it. I love Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Margot.

—" I just feel like with independent movies… they're really free to do whatever they want. They're not afraid to make a statement about anything, and there's not a huge studio behind them making sure that everything is wholesome and politically correct and all that. In mainstream movies, they want everything to make perfect sense, and in independents, it can be all over the place. People can just have fun with it."


Future projects

Roberts is set to be reunited with Nancy Drew director Andrew Fleming on both Rodeo Gal [51] and a Nancy Drew sequel, [52] although the latter has been put on hold.

She was also selected to play the lead role in James C. Strouse's high school sports comedy The Winning Season , alongside Sam Rockwell and Rob Corddry, [53] [54] [55] [56] which was also shown at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Most of The Winning Season was filmed in New York City, New York. [57] According to IMDb The Winning Season is slated for a 2009 release date. The Winning Season is comedy that centers on a has-been coach (Sam Rockwell) who is given an opportunity to redeem himself as a coach when he is asked to coach his local high school's all-girls basketball team. Roberts plays a supporting role in the film as Abby, a girl on the team. [58] [59] Thou the film The Winning Season currently does not have a trailer, there is a 45 second clip on IMDb of the movie. [60]

Roberts will star as Molly [61] alongside Chace Crawford and 50 Cent in Twelve . [62] [63] [64] The film began production in New York City on April 20, 2009. [65] It is set to be released in 2010.

Roberts is set to play Alice Leeds in the movie adaptation of Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac . [66] The book of the same name is about a high school junior named Naomi who hits her head and she can’t remember anything that happened since sixth grade. According to BloodyDisgusting.com Roberts will be starring in the horror film, Grimm , which follows the Quinn family that moves to Marburg, Massachusetts, a town that turns out to be haunted by the most horrific nightmares spawned by the imagination of the Brothers Grimm. [67]

Music career

In 2005, Roberts had a debut album Unfabulous and More , which helped her garner recognition as both a singer and musician. The album was released on September 27, 2005 through Columbia Records and Nick Records. It also served as the soundtrack to the popular television series, Unfabulous , in which Roberts stars as the leading role. The album peaked at #46 on ''Billboards Top Heatseekers chart. [68] In September, two promotional singles were released from the album: "I Wanna Be" and "Dummy". The album includes several original songs (among them "Dummy" and "I Wanna Be", both of which were also released as music videos, "I Have Arrived", and "This Is Me", which was co-written by Roberts), as well as some of Addie's songs from the first season, including "Punch Rocker" and "New Shoes" (both from the episode "The Party"), "94 Weeks (Metal Mouth Freak)" (from "The Bar Mitzvah") and "Mexican Wrestler" (which had previously appeared on Jill Sobule's 2000 album Pink Pearl and in the episode "The 66th Day" from Unfabulous'').

Heather Phares from Allmusic praised her "fresh" and "genuine voice", and also claimed that the album was "filled with, sweet idealistic songs sung by a young girl who sounds like a young girl instead of a pop tart". [69]

During the same year, Roberts recorded "If I Had It My Way" for the soundtrack of the 2005 Disney film Ice Princess . In 2006, Roberts covered the song "Island in the Sun", which was originally recorded by Weezer in 2001; she recorded the song for Aquamarine s soundtrack, a film here she starred as one of the leads.

Roberts said in a 2007 interview, "Right now I am focusing on movies, I am getting ready to start a new movie this summer so that is taking a lot of my time. I think when I am a little bit older it is definitely something I’d like to pursue." [70]

Regarding continuing her music career, she stated, "it seems like everyone records an album now. It doesn’t seem very special anymore." In another interview, she said,
My musical career is indefinitely on hold. I don’t like people who become like ‘actor slash singer.’ I think people should be one or the other because usually you’re not going to be great at both. You’re going to better at one, so you might as well stick to the one you’re good at. I’m going for acting." [71]


Personal life

Roberts has cited actress Anne Hathaway as a role model and has stated Rupert Grint is one of her favorite actors. She stated, "My most prized possession, though, is an autographed picture of Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films" Roberts has also stated she is a big fan of Gwyneth Paltrow. "I've Netflixed all of the Gwyneth Paltrow movies. I'm a huge fan of hers. She's kind of my idol at the moment. I really like Kirsten Dunst. She did a lot of cool, fun teen movies, and she's also done some serious roles. I like her style, and I think she seems pretty interesting."

She is close friends with her Aquamarine co-star Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque and good friends with fellow Nickelodeon stars Devon Werkheiser and Jamie-Lynn Spears. Some of Roberts favorite books include Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin and the A-List novels. Some of her favorite books are A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. She also enjoys Chuck Palahniuk books, Invisible Monsters , and said her favorite book is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. In her April 2009 Teen Vogue interview Roberts remarked, “I used to have a crush on Nick [Jonas, but he’s kind of making his rounds in Hollywood, and I don’t know if I like that.” Roberts had sparked controversy for saying that, which drew the media attention. Roberts then began to feel bad about the comment so then at the 2009 Kids' Choice Awards Roberts wrote Nick Jonas a hand written apology. The note read: "Nick, I love you. Sorry about the quote" [73]

Roberts said that she and her Lymelife co-star Rory Culkin are "good friends", so their on-screen romance "wasn’t really that awkward. We talked about it before and that made it much easier. Rory is really a great guy. I mean, I was definitely nervous. I kind of felt uncomfortable, but at the same time I think it worked for the scene because it is supposed to be our first time, and we are supposed to not know what we are doing.” [74]

On January 15, 2009 Roberts appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno . She admitted, "I failed my driving test and then my permit expired. And then I failed my permit test when I retook it. I didn’t know you had to stop before going right on red, so I just swung around the corner really quickly.” [75]

Roberts has also appeared as part of multiple times (including June 2007, September 2008, December 2008, February 2009, and March 2009). She said that some of her favorite movies are: Juno and Little Miss Sunshine . Roberts said that some of her musical influences are Michelle Branch, Skye Sweetnam, and The Veronicas

Education

Roberts attended Archer School for Girls in Brentwood, California from 2004-2005 for 7th and 8th grade. Roberts said in a 2007 interview on her education that: "Oh yes, I have a tutor and we have three hours of school every day. That way I am caught up on my work and then when I am not doing school work I am shooting something or other." Roberts had shown interest in attending two colleges in New York City, Sarah Lawrence College and New York University. [76]

Charities/Endorsements

In 2006, Roberts became a spokesmodel for Dooney & Bourke, and designed her own Dooney & Bourke handbag, named after her, the "Emma Bag." [77] In February 2009, she was named the brand ambassador for Neutrogena; she will star in print and commercial ads for the company. [78] Roberts said in an interview with JustJaredJr.com on being the face of Neutrogena: "it’s important to me to be associated with Neutrogena because they instill confidence and beauty in young women.” Roberts was a spokesperson for the second annual National "Drop Everything and Read" Day (D.E.A.R Day) on April 12, 2007. Roberts planned to participate in the Children’s Cancer Research Fund’s Kids 4 Kids Run/Walk in Los Angeles. She stated:
I am so honored to be an ambassador for the 4th year in a row, for the CCRF’s Annual Run/Walk. It has become an important tradition for me and I look forward to seeing all the great kids.
