One Night Of Queen
Since winning
Stars In Their Eyes
, Mullen has toured with his band The Works, putting on a sell-out two hour tribute act known as
One Night Of Queen
. The show takes references from many 1980's Queen tours, using a modified custom built lighting rig, made to emulate the lighting rigs used during several Queen tours between 1980 and 1986. Mullen and The Works have taken their tribute show on numerous tours across Europe, New Zealand and the US.

Acclaim and following
Mullen’s performance as Queen front-man Freddie Mercury is considered by many to be extremely accurate, over the last 6 years the One Night Of Queen show has gained many fans, including
Kevin Pollak ,
Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas and
Sir Trevor McDonald.
[3]
Brian May himself has kept regular tabs on the band, In 2005 he personally sent Mullen and The Works free backstage passes to a Queen and Paul Rodgers gig in
Leipzig, Germany. May has also been quoted several times praising the band, "Gary bears a remarkable likeness to Freddie, not only in emulating Freddie’s unique stage persona but also accurately reproducing Freddie’s live vocal style and range."
[4]
When asked about One Night of Queen, Queen's Drummer
Roger Taylor jokingly said that Mullen puts more Freddie into a show than Freddie himself did, and he hopes Mullen won't put the real Queen out of a job.
[5]
In 2006 One Night Of Queen was voted "greatest Queen tribute act" by phone and website votes of readers of music magazine
SongLines
. In 2007 The same magazine voted Mullen as "best Freddie Mercury
sound-alike."
[6]
Criticism
The show has been criticised by some for leaning too far towards 1980s era Queen in terms of imagery and setlist, as Queen spent an equal measure of the 1970s performing live and released and toured
A Night at the Opera
, the album many consider to be their
magnum opus, during that era.
[7]
Mullen has acknowledged the show's strong resemblance to the 1986
Magic Tour, stating that the band plans to remove the Magic Tour elements from the show in order to make it "more universal". The band are rehearsing more 1970s and post-1986 Queen songs for upcoming shows.
