Early Career (2006-2007)
Hyper Crush began with Donnie and Preston. Originally began as the Bel-Airs but as their style shifted so did their name They were seeking a female vocalist to go along with Donnie, their male vocalist. The two of them consulted their long-time friend, Holly, and she took the job.
The group first gained widespread exposure through their
MySpace site. They began playing shows locally in Los Angeles and other places in or close to California. In late 2007, they released their debut, "Mixtape Volume 1", which contained 31 original songs from Hyper Crush.
[1] Along with the Mixtape, they also released independently done music videos for "The Deloreon", which has been removed from Hyper Crush's youtube, and "Slow Motion". "Mixtape Volume 1" is here .
Hyper Crush makes copious references to the decades of the 1950s and 1980s in their music, as well as their appearance.
[2] They have made references to Nintendo, technicolor, hyper color, and Genesis. They even used sounds from
Duck Hunt to begin the song "The Arcade" and music from
The Legend of Zelda to end it.
The Arcade (2008)
On May 1, Hyper Crush hosted a CD release party for the release of their album "The Arcade", which was released that day. At the party, they also premiered the video for "The Arcade", the title track of the album.
[3] The video was not put online and made viewable to the public until June 29.
[4]
"The Arcade" was the debut album of Hyper Crush, and the follow-up to "Mixtape Volume 1". The album featured 13 songs, 2 of which had been previously released on the Mixtape.
The for "The Arcade" was A Hill Production and was directed by Mickey Finnegan. It was Hyper Crush's third video, but the first one to be professionally done.
Signing with Universal Motown
In early November, 2008, Hyper Crush signed with Universal Motown
[5]. They said in an interview that they had a new album coming out and it was almost done. They said that since "The Arcade" was independently released, they would use about 7 of the songs from "The Arcade" and rest of the new album would be new songs. They also stated that they don't have a final name for the new album, but "Bella Vista Rocks The Arcade" is currently the working title.
[6]
Hyper Crush released the video for "Robo Tech" in late February, 2009. This is their fourth video and second video to be professionally done. It is directed by Mickey Finnegan, as was "The Arcade".
Hyper Crush has had many of their songs featured on
MTV reality shows, such as
Bromance, and
The Real World.
