History
Japandroids was formed in 2006, and comprises Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums. The two met at the University of Victoria, where King studied science and Prowse anthropology. [1] They originally intended to find a third member to act as lead vocalist, but later decided to forgo having a specific lead singer and simply share vocal duties. The band self-released two limited edition EPs, 2007's All Lies
and 2008's Lullaby Death Jams
, prior to signing with independent Canadian label Unfamiliar Records in January of 2009. Their debut LP, Post-Nothing
was released mid-2009. They were subsequently signed to Polyvinyl in June of 2009. Japandroids was featured as the X3 Artist of the month by Aux.tv, CBC Radio 3 and Exclaim! Magazine for May 2009. [2]
First Tour Cancellation
In April 2009, Japandroids were forced to cancel their first full-scale North American tour (28 cities over six weeks) due to a health emergency. King was checked into Calgary's Foothills Medical Centre on April 24th to undergo emergency surgery for a life-threatening perforated ulcer. [1] Among the cancelled dates was their show at the Sasquatch! Music Festival. [1]
Name
The name Japandroids came from two other band name ideas: Japanese Scream (from Prowse) and Pleasure Droids (from King). [5] Occasionally they will spell it without vowels, as JPNDRDS.
