Life
Popson is a philosopher and a musician, reporting to have been in the music industry for about fourteen years in an interview taken in 2005. It's been hinted lyrically and in such interviews that he was raised an only-child by a single parent — his mother — following the departure of his father from his life at a young age. However, Popson later regained touch with his father, which played a pivotal role in him leaving Mushroomhead. He also does old school shows with mushroomhead around the fourth of July time of year. He stated in an interview that he had started his own record label.
Popson's father, John, died in Sept. 2006 and in memory of his father, Jason performed a concert at Peabody's Down Under in Cleveland, Ohio on Sept. 29, 2006. The concert acted as a benefit for his father's funeral, and featured Popson performing songs from many of his previous and current bands.
Popson is now in a metal band with former
Strapping Young Lad/
Death drummer
Gene Hoglan called Pitch Black Forecast which also features Robert Reinard on guitar, and Craig Martini on bass. The band most recently added guitarist Tom Shafner to its lineup. Pitch Black Forecast was formerly known as Absentee and the group's first release was on Popson's Fractured Transmitter released Melvins tribute album — released through Fractured Transmitter — titled "We Reach: The Melvins" when the band performed a cover of the song "Revolve."
Popson will release a second PBF album in 2009 and will be on at least one song on Mushroomhead's upcoming album in 2010.
