KROQ Weenie Roast Wiki Information
Weenie Roast
is a multi-artist alternative rock concert, presented annually by the Los Angeles, California, USA radio station KROQ, beginning in 1993. The concert had always been presented on the second or third Saturday in June since it was aired until 2004. Since 2005 it has been presented in May, and since 2006 the event title has been re-branded as Weenie Roast y Fiesta
.
Its East Coast "sister" concert, presented by KROQ's Baltimore/Washington, DC affiliate station WHFS, is the HFStival.
Every year it has taken place at Irvine Meadows / Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, in Irvine, CA, except for 2000 where it was held at Angel Stadium, in Anaheim, CA.
The Second Annual KROQ Weenie Roast & Sing-a-long is notable for the small riot started on Saturday May 14, 1994 at the Tower Records location in La Puente by those waiting in line to purchase tickets. Approximately 2,000+ people were waiting in-line to buy tickets. Wrist-bands with numbers were supposed to have been issued, in order, to those waiting in-line. The numbers were then to have been drawn allowing two tickets to be purchased per wrist-band. However, the staff members handing out wrist-bands began to hand them out randomly, which resulted in people swarming the staff members and grabbing bags of wrist-bands. When it became clear to those further back in line that they were not getting wrist-bands, a riot ensued in which people attempted to break into the store. The West Covina Police Department sent its riot squad to disperse the crowd; smoke bombs were used. Those with wrist-bands were later asked to send them in with their contact information and a 'raffle' was held to sell the tickets from that location.
