Early life
Brown was born in
Iowa City, Iowa in 1973, the daughter of two preachers' kids.
[2] She grew up in Iowa and
Birmingham, Alabama, amongst a
bohemian and musical family. She moved quite frequently, returning to Iowa as a teenager, and later lived for a time in the New York area, and also in Tucson Arizona. She was greatly influenced by her father, the two-time Grammy nominee folk artist
Greg Brown. Pieta Brown started writing poetry and songs on an old piano when she was just eight years old.
Career
By her early 20s, Brown was known as a gifted performer, and she enlisted the help of highly respected guitarist and producer
Bo Ramsey. He produced her 2002 debut record,
Pieta Brown
, and later co-produced her album
In the Cool
in 2005. That album was named one of the year’s best by Amazon.com and a number of newspapers across America. It also broke into the Top 20 of the
Americana Music Association radio chart and the Top 30 on the
AAA radio chart.
Brown's latest album,
Remember the Sun
, released in 2007, shows a progression of Brown's writing and recording skills. Pieta sings and plays acoustic and electric guitars and piano, and is accompanied by Bo Ramsey and many other fine musicians.
