Ruby Turner
(born 22 June 1958, Montego Bay, Jamaica) is a British soul singer, songwriter and actress. Turner moved to Handsworth, Birmingham, England when she was nine years old, in 1967. Her major break came in the mid 1980s, when she joined Culture Club and a solo recording contract with Jive Records followed.

Career
Turner has performed with
Bryan Ferry,
UB40,
Steve Winwood,
Jools Holland and
Mick Jagger, as well as
writing songs that have been covered by many
artists including
Lulu,
Yazz and
Maxi Priest. Between 1986 and 1995, eight of her
singles appeared in the
UK Singles Chart with "I'd Rather Go Blind" being the most successful reaching number 24 in 1987.

Turner performed at the Birmingham
Heart Beat 86 [2] concert which featured
George Harrison,and
she also sang in
Jools Holland's Hootenanny
, an annual New Year's music programme for
BBC TV, the 2007/08 and 2008/09 editions.
Albums
Her first
album,
Women Hold Up Half The Sky
, was released in 1986, to critical acclaim.Other albums were released over the next few years, and included such
hits as "
If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)" (a
duet with
Jonathan Butler of a
cover version of the
Staple Singers'
song) and "
I'd Rather Go Blind". She also had a
U.S. R&B chart number 1 hit single "It's Gonna Be Alright",
[3] one of less than ten British made
records to achieve this. At this time Turner also released her hit album
The Motown Songbook
on which she performed with
Motown stars including
The Four Tops,
The Temptations and
Jimmy Ruffin.In 1998 she recorded
Call me By My Name
[4] which was released on the Indigo record label
[5]. The musicians listed in the album credits includes bassist
Boz Burrell from
Bad Company, guitarist and vocalist
Bobby Tench, guitarist
Stan Webb and keyboardist
Zoot Money who also has a
production credit.

.On 12 October 2007, Turner appeared as a guest star (as herself) in the
BBC One soap opera,
Doctors
. The episode title was entitled "Raising The Roof"
