History
Having begun in
Santa Cruz,
California, the band moved to
San Francisco where they are now based. They have been signed to
Fat Wreck Chords since 1996.
Influences
As well as being classed as a "punk revival" band (reminiscent of
British 1970s bands such as
Stiff Little Fingers,
The Damned,
Sham 69 and
Eddie and the Hot Rods), Swingin' Utters have increasingly shown themselves to be influenced by traditional
American country and folk music, as well as
Irish folk, particularly
The Pogues.
Side projects
Members of the Swingin' Utters have been involved in many musical
side projects, most notably
Johnny Bonnel and
Darius Koski's
Filthy Thievin' Bastards (formed in 2000) and
Druglords of the Avenues (formed in
Oakland, California in 2004), and
Spike Slawson's
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (in which he is the
vocalist).
Drummer
Greg McEntee also joined
Viva Hate in February 2007, and the
Re-Volts are
fronted by
Spike Slawson, with Darius Koski and Jack Dalrymple on guitar in that band. Jack Dalrymple plays guitar in fellow Fat Wreck band
Dead to Me as well. Jack also sang and played guitars in One Man Army which who were on Adeline Records until they disbanded in 2005.
On soundtracks
Swingin' Utters tracks have been used in the soundtracks of
video games. "Five Lessons Learned" appeared on the soundtrack to
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
and "Stupid Lullabies" was used as the title track to
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX
.
