Ellis graduated from Emory University in 1979 with a degree in history. Following on from the Heartfixers Ellis formed a new band and signed a recording contract with Alligator Records.
His peers include Derek Trucks, Widespread Panic, and the Allman Brothers. His song "Hell or High Water" was given away as a 'discovery download' on iTunes.
