Tool History
The band that became Tool was formed in a rather casual manner as most of the members seemed to just drift together all being from the Los Angeles, California region. The original members included Paul D'Amour, Adam Jones, Maynard James Keenan, and Danny Carey. Once together, the band settled on the name Tool because of its duel hidden meaning. Tool's rise to stardom happened relatively quickly as they were signed to a record deal three months after being together.
Through their new label, Zoo Entertainment, the band produced its first studio album with "Undertow." This album was in the heavy metal fashion of rock music and featured the hit single "Sober." As a result of Sober and other hit singles, Undertow went platinum and fans would turn out to their shows and by their records in droves. However, unlike other rock groups and singers, Tool took great pains and time to produce their follow up album in 1996. This is a trend they would follow throughout their career together as band in not rushing production just to get an album on the shelves.
One of the key elements to Tool is the fact that they are not defined by just the heavy metal theme they first burst onto the scene with. While remaining a rock band, they have altered their sound on each work after the first album. In total, Tool has put out four albums that include Undertow, "AEnima," "Laterlus," and "10,000." One of the key aspects to this band has been its fight against censorship along with bands like the Henry Rollins Band and Rage Against the Machine. The counter culture created from this has only aided Tool in finding fans which has made them one of the premier rock groups in the United States today.
