Childhood and youth
Yas first began to listen to
rap music at the age of 16, when his father would return from business trips in Germany and bring him the latest
Tupac Shakur CDs and other
hip hop music. After the sudden death of his father, Yasf was forced to abandon his college plans to support his family. It was at this time that he began to write poetry which soon turned into lyrics for his music.
Musical works
After the
Bam earthquake in Iran, Yas was inspired to write his first song,
Bam
. Though he faced criticism from an audience unaccustomed to rap music, his efforts were eventually successful. As of 2009, six of his 10 songs have been granted permission to be released in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Yas' songs include
CD-ro Beshkan
("Break that CD"), decrying a sex-tape which destroyed the career of an Iranian actress, and
Hoviat-e Man
("My Identity"), about his pride in Persian culture.
Public reception
Yas has been interviewed by the media worldwide, including CNN, BBC and National Geographic. In 2008 he signed a contract with
Mobida Publishing, who authorised a Yas
mashup of works by
Tupac Shakur.
