Washington Nationals History

As an organization, the Nationals have been in existence since 1969 when they were an expansion team in Montreal, Quebec. The Nationals were originally called the Expos while they were in Montreal and were the first expansion team outside of the United States. Unfortunately, the Expos had but one divisional title, and that was in a strike-shortened season.

While in Montreal, the Expos were more or less a perennially bad team to the point that the organization was not profitable. Once they sold the rights to Pedro Martinez, a great up and coming pitcher, to the Boston Red Sox, it was a foregone conclusion that the Expos were running on borrowed time in Montreal. The decision was finally made to move the franchise to Washington D.C. in 2005.

Once the move was made, the Nationals immediately began rebuilding the franchise into something that could be considered a reputable team. Two notable additions to the team were the drafting of gold glove, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman in 2006 and pitcher Stephan Strasberg in 2009. They have had an immediate impact and have one again brought respectability back to this franchise.
