Oklahoma City Thunder History

The franchise that later became the Oklahoma City Thunder was founded as the Seattle Supersonics in 1967. The Sonics were one of the better expansion teams to be added to the NBA as they were competitive a few years into the league. After hiring Bill Russell as head coach in 1975, the Supersonics made NBA title runs. With players like Spencer Haywood, Fred Broke, Tommy Burleson, and Slick Watts, the Sonics won their first and only NBA title in 1979.

After the being a dominant team in the Western Conference during the late 1970's and early 80's, the Sonics went into a rebuilding phase. The 1990's would be their second golden age, though it yielded no championships. Armed with players like Sean Kemp, Gary Payton, and Detlef Schrempf, the Sonics were again contenders. They made it to the NBA finals once during this decade in 1996 but fell short of their second championship losing to the Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in six games.

Once the turn of the millennium occurred, the Sonics hit a downturn. This downturn caused a drop in team revenues and fan support in Seattle, which prompted the team to move to Oklahoma City in 2008. They continued to rebuild the team over the next few seasons, but the major addition to their roster was Kevin Durant from the University of Texas. Durant has shined in his first seasons with the Thunder and is building this teams reputation back up to the Sean Kemp and Spencer Haywood standards of play.
