The Tigers
is the name used for all of the men's intercollegiate athletic teams that play for Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia. The female intercollegiate teams are known as the Lady Tigers

Conference Affiliation
There are 7 men's and 6 women's teams that compete in the
NCAA Division I-AA, currently as an independent. Before moving to Division I-AA, Savannah State was a member of the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the NCAA
Division II (1981–2005), NCAA
Division III and the Southeastern Athletic Conference in the
NAIA (1929–1961). The school applied for membership in the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2005.
[1] [2] The MEAC has officially placed SSU's application on hold until the completion of a three-year NCAA probation which will be completed on May 18, 2009.

Organization
Athletics at Savannah State University are administered by the Savannah State University Athletic Department. The department dedicates about $2 million per year for its sports teams and facilities.

The football team is traditionally the most popular sport at Savannah State. The games are played at
Ted A. Wright Stadium. Since moving to
NCAA Division I-AA in 2000, the Tigers have compiled a 15-80-0 record as of the 2007–2008 season.
Prior to moving to Division I-AA the team compiled a 97-108-4 record in NCAA
Division II (1981–2000), a 15-20-0 record in NCAA
Division III (1973–1980) and a 1-1-0 record as a member of the
NAIA.

The program's largest margin of victory was 67 points against
Miles College in 1992 (Savannah State, 73 – Miles College, 6). The largest margin of defeat was 98 points against Bethune-Cookman College in 1953 (Bethune-Cookman 98, Savannah State 0).

The team regularly participates in one or more
black football classics each season including the
CSRA Classic, the
Palmetto Capital City Classic, and the
Joe Turner Classic. The team has previously participated in the
Gateway Classic, the
Miami Classic, and the
Circle City Classic.
Head Coach
On December 22, 2007, Savannah State University named
Robert "Robby" Wells as its new head football coach.

Theo Lemon who was relieved of his duties as head coach on November 30, 2007.

Wells, the former defensive coordinator and football marketing director at Benedict College, is the 21st head football coach at Savannah State University.

Savannah State competes in
NCAA Division I as an independent and plays home games in
Tiger Arena on the university campus.
The school gained notoriety when they finished the 2004–2005 men's basketball season a winless 0-28, the first Division I team to do so since
Prairie View A&M University in 1991–1992.

Horace Broadnax became the men's head basketball coach in 2005.
Conference championships and NCAA playoffs
Before moving to Division I the team won the
SIAC conference championship in 1970, 1979, 1980, and 1981.
The 1978-79 Tigers won an overtime game against
Albany (NY) (Savannah State- 82; Albany - 81) in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, but lost in the second round to
Centre College (Centre - 82, Savannah State - 54).

In the 1980 Division III playoffs the Tigers defeated
UNC Greensboro in the first round (Savannah State - 61, UNC Greensboro - 58) before losing to
Lane College in the regional championships (Lane - 87, Savannah State - 70).
The 1980-81 Tigers won the SIAC Division III Championship and the NCAA South Regional Championship before finishing the season as the NCAA Division III South Quarterfinal runner-up.
During this run they defeated the
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the first round (Savannah State - 76, Rose-Hulman - 62), and
Rhodes College in the regional championships (Savannah State - 76, Rhodes - 75) before losing an overtime game to
Otterbein College in the quarterfinals (Otterbein - 67, Savannah State - 64).

The team also hold the NCAA Division II records of 12.59 average runs per game in a season (2000), 58 total triples in a season (1998) and 1.18 average triples per game in a season (1998).
- Theophalus Gregory established the NCAA Division III record of 1.92 average stolen bases per game in 1974 as a member of the Savannah State baseball team. [72]
- Gerald Smith, held the 2005 NCAA Division I top slugging percentage (.785) as a member of the Savannah State baseball team.
- Savannah State baseball player Brett Higgins (2000) holds the NCAA Division II record of 32 doubles in a season (in 49 games) with four other players and led the NCAA in RBIs (93), slugging percentage (1.010), and total bases (193) in 2000.
