Colorado Avalanche History

The Colorado Avalanche was only called so after the team moved to Denver in 1995. The hockey club was founded in Quebec City as the Nordiques. The Quebec Nordiques were a member of the rival WHA before a few of the teams were folded into the NHL in 1979. Once in the NHL, the Nordiques would be an average team making the playoffs six consecutive seasons during the 1980's. However, they would slide down the standings at the end of the decade and become one of the worst hockey teams in existence.

During the early 1990's, the Nordiques assembled the foundation for a championship by trading away Eric Lindros, a valued pick in a five player deal to the Philadelphia Flyers. In this trade they received Peter Forsberg. Coupled with other picks like Owen Nolan and Mats Sundin, the Nordiques began to shift from a bad hockey team back to a good one. Another key addition was finding goaltender Patrick Roy who became the all time wins leader in NHL history.

When the Nordiques were moved to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, due to financial trouble in Quebec, they started a steak of ten straight seasons in the playoffs. Captain Joe Sakic helped lead this team to their two Stanley Cup victories in 1996 and 2001. The Avalanche became a dominant team in the west during this time period being host to one of the most dangerous lineups ever assembled in the NHL.
