Though the Ottawa Senators of today were founded in 1990, they are actually derived from an old NHL club based out of this city dating back to 1889. That team won eleven Stanley Cups over their tenure in Ottawa but was eventually forced to move and be dissolved completely by 1934 after revenue sales dipped due to expansion. However, this would not be the last NHL team in Ottawa as the new Senators were expanded back to Ottawa in 1990 and they played their first NHL game three years later in 1993.

The new Ottawa Senators team struggled out of the gate and secured a high draft position. They made the most of the opportunity and drafted some of the best talent in the league. Some of the drafted players were Radek Bonk, Alexei Yashin, Wade Redden, and Marian Hossa. When Jacques Martin was made head coach in 1996, the Senators made the playoffs for the first time. This would mark this team as a true contender in the Eastern Conference.

With the addition of players like Jason Spezza and Zdeno Chara, the Senators were primed to make legitimate runs at its first Stanley Cup. In 2007, the team would come very close as they rolled through the playoffs and captured the Eastern Conference Championship. However, destiny did not hold the Stanley Cup in the team's future as the Ducks would capture the championship in only five games.
