The Bellydance Superstars
is a professional American belly dance troupe formed by Miles Copeland. Founded in 2002, the troupe extensively tours North America and Europe. It has released Bellydance Superstars I
, II
, and III
, compilations of music and three DVDs, with a feature documentary film called American Bellydancer
. An ensemble troupe called Desert Roses was also formed. They have now begun their 2008 tour, Babelesque.
The "American-ness" of Bellydance Superstars is marked by the ethnic diversity and the Hollywood-esque show full of eye-catching entertainment, including a comedic dancing Marilyn Monroe skit conducted by Dondi.
Bellydance Superstars have brought "Tribal Style" bellydance, often seen as an offshoot of American Tribal Style Belly Dance, to the mainstream. It was formerly an underground branch of belly dance formed by Carolena Nericcio and her San Francisco based dance company, Fat Chance Belly Dance. Rachel Brice is a prominent member, her performances often characterized by dark, goth-inspired costumes, snaky moves and electronica and new age infused music. The tribal dancers appreciate the difference between tribal and other common dances such as ballet or jazz and the extreme emphasis the dance requires of the core muscle isolation (especially in the abdomen, pelvic girdle, and thoracic spine). Current member Moria indicates that tribal has a therapeutic value because of its lack of hard impact moves. Whereas in ballet and other classic theatre dance arts the performer’s hips, knees, and ankles often absorb such strain from years of leaping and touring that it is one difficult to maintain longevity and two is not accessible to every body type, belly dance with it’s higher emphasis on muscular isolation than skeletal virtuosity can be safely practiced from age 2 to 82. The undulating and isolating components that characterize belly dance are reticent of snake-like, smooth and often observed as sensual movement. This perception of belly dance as either sensual or seductive has both allured and confused public opinion of the dance as something that deserves recognition as a fine art.
Jillina is the choreographer and artistic director of the troupe numbers.
