Aerosmith History

Aerosmith came about in 1969 in Sunapee, New Hampshire, when Steven Tyler and Joe Perry's bands played a gig together at a local club. Tyler [then Steven Tallarico] decided he wanted to front Perry's blues-inspired band. The newly formed band played their first gig at a Massachusetts regional high school in '70, and the rest as they say, is history. The lineup was as follows: Steven Tyler [Tallarico] on vocals, Joe Perry on lead guitar, Ray Tabano on rhythm guitar, Tom Hamilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford shortly after, but came back as part of the band's road crew and eventually became its marketing director.

The lineup was finalized in 1971 and the band was official. It quickly gained a large local fan-base, and shortly after, in '72, they were signed with a $125,000 contract from Columbia records. They then released their debut album,Aerosmith, a rock n' roll album with heavy blues influences. The highest charting single from this album was "Dream On" at number 59, and the album went from the initial 'gold'-status to reaching double platinum a decade later.

The band has since released thirteen more albums, including the 8x platinumToys in the Atticin 1975, 7x platinumPumpin 1989, and the most recent, gold-status albumHonkin' on Boboin 2004. Aerosmith has put out numerous hit singles since then, too, including "Angel" (1988) at #3, "Janie's Got a Gun" (1990) at #4, and "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" (1998) at #1. Many of these songs are included in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, a popular video game released in 2008 honoring Aerosmith's music. As of 2010, the band continues to rock on with sellout shows at every performance.
