The performer known around the world as Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight. He began playing piano when he was just three years old and, by the time he was four, he was able to play "The Skater's Waltz" by Winifred Atwell by ear. He began formal piano lessons at age seven and, when he was eleven, won a junior scholarship to The Royal Academy of Music, where he would study for several years.

At age fifteen, Elton John started playing in piano bars a well as with a few side bands. After a few unsuccessful auditions to front bands, he answered an ad posted by the A&R manager for Liberty Records. He was given a stack of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin to which he wrote music, beginning a songwriting partnership that continues to this day.

Everyone knows about the many chart topping hits that Elton John has produced throughout his career, but they may not realize that he is also extremely accomplished in musical theatre. In 1998, he wrote music for the award winning Broadway adaptation of The Lion King. Just a year later, he teamed up with Tim Rice to write the music for another Disney Broadway musical entitled Aida. The music for Aida earned him a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and Tony Award for Best Original Score. Then, in 2005, he composed another hit theatrical production on London's West End called Billy Elliot, based on the Academy Award winning film.
