New Orleans Hornets History

The New Orleans Hornets organization was founded in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1989 and joined the league along with three other franchises. Like most expansion teams across all sports, this team struggled for its first four years. However, the addition of players like Mugsy Bogues, Kendall Gill, and Larry Johnson, known as Grandma-ma, help solidify this team for future seasons.

With this core of players, the Hornets began to emerge as a force to reckoned with in the mid 1990's. The addition of future Hall of Fame player, Alonzo Mourning, helped solidify this team as a contender in the 92-93 season. They made it the playoffs for the first time following this season but would make it back the nest year as well. However, this team would eventually trade away its talent or lose them to injuries, prompting a move to a new city.

This move came when the team sold its interests to New Orleans in 2001. The Charlotte people were assured that another franchise would soon take its place. Once this move happened, the Hornets traded older veterans like Jamal Mashburn to begin a rebuilding process. This was accomplished when they drafted a premier point guard out of Wake Forest named Chris Paul in 2006. Paul has been regarded as one of the premier stars in the NBA over the last 3 seasons and is a big reason that this squad won its first divisional title in 2008.
