Toronto Raptors History

As part of the re-expansion into Canada, the NBA granted the city of Toronto an expansion team in 1993 that would be called the Raptors. The Raptors would be built over the next two seasons and play their first basketball game in 1995. As most expansion teams, like their Canadian counterparts, the Grizzlies, the Raptors struggled out of the gate during their first five seasons from 1995 to 1999.

This would all change when the Raptors were able to secure Vince Carter in the 1998 draft by trading their first round pick, Antwan Jamison, to the Golden State Warriors. Carter was coupled with Doug Christie, Dell Curry, and Mugsy Bogues to bring this franchise to prominence. In 1999, they celebrated their first entry into the playoffs and would make it three consecutive times.

After the Vince Carter era ended, the Raptors sank back down the standings for a few seasons. However, the high lottery draft pick of Chris Bosh in 2003 led this franchise back to prominence. They added their first division title in 2007 to their history under Bosh's leadership. However, they still struggled for success once the second season started. The team is once again rebuilding, but excitement is back in the air with the stable of young talent that they have accumulated.
