Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning came into existence during the 1992 NHL expansion, and in their fourth season (1995-96) they reached the playoffs for the first time. They only made it to the first round, but their game set an NHL record for indoor attendance at 28,183. The next few years may have been down years for the Lightning, but they came surging back with playoff appearances in 2002-03 and 2003-04. During the 2003-04 season, led by Brad Richards, they took down the Calgary Flames and won their first Stanley Cup. It was only their twelfth year in existence, and was only a couple years after losing 50 games.

The Lightning play at the St. Pete Times Forum, which was formerly called the Ice Palace. The stadium features a capacity of just under 20,000, as well as a number of luxury boxes. It was created to take the place of Tropicana Field (then known as the Thunderdome) in St. Petersburg as the home of the Lightning. It opened in 1996 to a Lightning victory over the Rangers.
