Walking With Dinosaurs History

The idea for Walking With Dinosaurs first came about in 1996, just a few short years after Jurassic Park brought dinosaurs back to the forefront of pop culture. The idea was that it would be a BBC miniseries that would help make paleontology exciting and relevant for universal audiences. It was not until 1999 that the miniseries finally aired and was so successful that it was developed into a live arena spectacular.

The UK production of Walking With Dinosaurs features twenty dinosaurs and the US production includes seventeen, representing ten different species. The sheer size of the dinosaurs is stunning, with the largest standing thirty-six feet tall and fifty-six feet from nose to tail. Each one weighs about a ton and a half and runs on six roller blade wheels. It takes a team of three to run each dinosaur: one driver and two puppeteers, one of which operates the head and tail while the other operates the subtle movements that make them so lifelike.
