In true Texas form, the Astros were originally called the "Colt .45's" when they were brought into the National League as an expansion team with the Mets. The Houston Astros became the team's name in the 1965 and was named after Houston's bustling space program at the time. The stadium that was built for them would also be named the Astrodome.

During their first 25 years in the big leagues, the Astros were a good second tier team that could never seem to get over the hump. This was in spite of great players and pitchers coming through the organization during this time period. Players like Nolan Ryan, Roger Metzger, and Jose Cruz got them too many big games, but it always seemed like another team would edge them out in the end.

The best times recorded in Astros history was during the late 1990's and early 2000's. The organization had many great ball players like Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens lead them to their only Pennant in 2005 and 4 Central division titles. However, once again the title remained elusive as they were beaten soundly by the White Sox in the World Series that year.
