The organization that would eventually become the Texas Rangers was founded in 1961 and was originally called the Washington D.C. Senators. Unlike the previous Senators team that had become the Twins, the new Senators team was an expansion to the American League. However, due to abysmal play and direct competition with the dominant Orioles, owners decided to move to the fresh grounds of Texas.

In 1972, the Washington D.C. Senators were moved to the Dallas Ft. Worth area to aid the city of Houston's attempt to bring baseball to Texas. The team would be renamed the Texas Rangers and baseball would officially come to Arlington. The first years of the move were marked as the "Valentine Era" because manager Bobby Valentine became the longest tenured coach in club history.

It wasn't until the late 1980's and early 1990's that the Texas Rangers started making some noise as a team. The additions of an aging Nolan Ryan, Pete Incaviglia, Mitch Williams, Bobby Witt, and Ruben Sierra put the Rangers in contention for the first time since Ted Williams was the coach of the old Senators club. They would go on to win three division titles in 1996, 1998, 1999.
