Denver Nuggets History

The team that eventually became the Denver Nugget was originally called the Rockets but were forced to change their name in 1974 because Houston's franchise already had that moniker. With their chosen name taken, the decision was made to call them the Nuggets. The team had the most success in its first two seasons as the Nuggets under legendary coach Larry Brown. They were accepted into the NBA in 1976 along with three other ABA teams: the Pacers, Spurs, and Nets.

After the merger, the Nuggets started off with a strong showing in the NBA as they won their division two of the first three years in the league. After Larry Brown left in 1979, the team suffered its first small, dark period but did continue to light up the scoreboards. They scored an excess of 100 points in 136 straight games in the early 1980's, a record that still stands today. Though they did make it back to contention by the late 1980's, the team could not make it to the championship game.

The 1990's would come and go as the Nuggets remained a solid team, but due to an ownership and coaching carousel, they never amounted to much. It wasn't until the turn of the millennium that the next era of prosperity began with the drafting of Carmelo Anthony. Anthony, along with NBA coaching giant George Karl, have brought this franchise back to prominence over the past decade. They are perennial playoff contenders in the Western Conference and have added players like Kenyon Martin and Chauncey Billups to bolster their lineup for future seasons.
