The Miami Heat were founded as part of a four team expansion to the NBA and played their first season in 1989. Their first decade was marred with tragedy and losses, like most expansion teams. The Heat would go on to win their first division titles from 1997 through 2000 but fell back down the standings in 2002.

One of the best moves made by Pat Riley was drafting Dwayne Wade in 2003. This point guard would become the superstar attraction that, when coupled with Shaquille O'Neal fresh out of Los Angeles, won this franchise its first NBA title in 2006. Since this championship season, the Heat has loaded its roster with talent. The 2010 off-season saw both Chris Bosh and LeBron James come into the fold creating a team that has to be considered the main challenger to stop the Lakers from repeating again.
