New Jersey Nets History

Originally founded in 1967 as part of the ABA, the New York Nets were folded into the NBA as a part of a major merger in 1976. They were founded as the New York Americans but were moved to New Jersey at the last minute. They spent their first few years moving from arena to arena that included an armory, a gym in Long Island, and an Arena in Teaneck, New Jersey. They played most of their ABA years in the Nassau Veterans Coliseum.

Due to the expenses of moving to the NBA, the Nets were forced to settle in New Jersey and sell their most valuable player in "Dr. J," Julius Erving to Philadelphia. The Nets had trouble up until the 1980's when the team was rebuilt. They were a dominating team from 1980 to 1985, with players like Darryl Dawkins, Otis Birdsong, and Buck Williams. However, these early 80's teams never could manage to go deep into the playoffs and ultimately fell back down in the standing over the next 15 years.

The true golden age of the New Jersey Nets came at the turn of the millennium. The addition of marquee NBA talent like Jason Kidd, Chris Dudley, and Dikembe Mutombo helped this team compete to win division titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006. They would go on to their only two appearances in the NBA finals in 2002 and 2003. However, they would fall short of winning their first titles these years as the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs dominated the league.
