A city that was starved for a professional team for most of the 20th century was Orlando, Florida. For this reason the Magic were expanded to the NBA in 1989 to help bring professional sports to the state of Florida. They were given the name, the Magic, because of the team's location next to Disney World. They have been the most winningest of all the expansion teams put in the league in 1989 as they have made it to post season play 12 of their 21 years in the NBA.

They have won so many games because of the multitude of talent that has filled this team's rosters over their 21 year history. Because of their draft position, the first dominant Magic teams were built around Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway. Shaq and Penny lead the Magic to their first NBA finals in 1995 but lost to the Houston Rockets in four straight games. Together, these players gave opponents headaches until they both left town for more lucrative contracts in 1996.

After the Shaq era ended, the Magic went through their first rebuilding phase. Though they stayed competitive, they wouldn't have a great resurgence in the playoffs for quite some time. In 2009, the Magic reached the NBA finals again with the help of guard Jameer Nelson and center Dwight Howard. They would lose the series again, this time to the Lakers, but have solidified a great young core of players for the future.
