San Antonio Spurs History

The team that later became the San Antonio Spurs was actually a member of the ABA when it was founded in Dallas, Texas in 1967. There were known as the Dallas Chaparrals before they were eventually moved to San Antonio. The big acquisition of the time period came when this team got George, the Iceman, Gervin in 1973. However, due to the failure of the ABA, the team was relocated to San Antonio and gained admission to the NBA in 1976.

Once the move took place in 1973, the Chaps were renamed the Spurs. After the merger, the Spurs were placed in the Western Conference of the NBA. The Spurs were a contending team during their first seasons in the NBA thanks to the roster brought over from the ABA. They made the playoffs in their first NBA season, though they were beaten by the Celtics in the first round. They would remain a contending team until they suffered a downturn in the mid 1980's.

This franchise would be resurrected in the late 1990's by drafting, "the Admiral," David Robinson from the Naval Academy. They would win division titles five times during the decade and their first NBA title in 1999, but the 2000's would see them win three titles. After Robinson retired following a championship in 2003, the Spurs would win two more titles in 2005 and 2007.
