Looking at the early history of the Oakland Raiders, a fan of this franchise should be thankful a professional team was based here. When the AFL was looking for host cities, this organization was supposed to be based in Minneapolis. However, when the Vikings were created by the NFL, the AFL club that started here moved to Oakland and the Raiders were born in 1960.

In their years, the Raiders were homeless in Oakland and had to play many of their games in Candlestick Park, the home of the 49ers in San Francisco. When they finally moved to Oakland Al Davis, the future owner, was brought in to curb the losing trends during their first two seasons as head coach and general manager. From this point on, the Raiders would only have seven losing seasons between 1963 and 2002.

Over the course of the 1960's and early merger years of the 1970's, the Raiders would be one of the premier teams in the AFL, which would later turn into the AFC. However, though they made it to Super Bowl II and constantly went up against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they wouldn't win their first Super Bowl title until 1976 under head coach John Madden.

The Raiders would stay at the forefront of the AFC West as they won two more Super Bowls, one in 1981 besting the Philadelphia Eagles and again in 1983 routing the Washington Redskins. However, with Al Davis as the owner of the team now, the Raiders would have misfortunes with star players like Bo Jackson, John Marinovich, and Marcus Allen. They would not make it back to the Super Bowl until 2003, when they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
