Anaheim Ducks History

The Anaheim Ducks were formerly known as the Mighty Ducks for the first 13 years of their existence. They were founded in 1993 as an expansion team to the Western Conference of the NHL and were originally owned by the Walt Disney Company. They set this team up to capitalize on the hockey frenzy created by "The Mighty Ducks" movie put out in the previous year. They played their games in Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim before the arena's name was changed to the Honda Center.

When the Ducks started their team, they named Paul Kariya as their first selection in the 1993 draft and he became the franchise's first player. They assembled a team around this dynamite NHL player and won their first NHL game in a shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs. They would make the playoffs for the first time in 1996 but wouldn't enter a Stanley Cup conversation until after the millennium.

It was in the 2002-2003 season that the Ducks went to their first Stanley Cup finals. Though they would take the series the distance, they would eventually fall to the New Jersey Devils. Following the lockout season, the Ducks were sold to Henry and Susan Samueli. Under new ownership, the Ducks would remain a leading team in the Western Conference and make it back to the Stanley Cup in the 2006-07 season. This time they would hoist the Stanley Cup Trophy as they beat the Ottawa Senators in five games.
