Other Buffalo Teams
Besides the Sabres, the only other major pro team to be based out of this city in New York State is the Buffalo Bills. The Bills have fallen on hard times over the last decade but have had their golden age at the end of the 1980's and early 1990's. They went to four straight Super Bowls but fell short each time. However, this team under head coach, Marv Levy, and Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly is regarded as the best to ever be fielded by the Bills.
While there are only two major sports franchises in Buffalo, they do host a wide range of minor league teams. The most successful of these is the Buffalo Bisons who play in the International League and are a fan favorite of Buffalo. This town also hosts both men's and women's soccer teams and a men's lacrosse team. Of these three, the men's lacrosse team, the Buffalo Bandits, have been the most successful winning their league a total of four times since 1992.

Buffalo Sabres History
The original owners, Northrop Knox and Seymour Knox III, of the Buffalo Sabres brought ice hockey to this hotbed area in New York State in 1970. They tried to get a team when the league had the major expansion in 1967 but failed to obtain a franchise. Once given a franchise, the Sabres wasted no time in setting up a competitive team.
They set up this competitive team by getting rights to acquire players from Quebec, Canada which was a first in the NHL. Up until 1970, hockey players from Quebec were regularly signed by the Canadiens who had exclusive rights to players from their area. They set up the "French Connection" line that featured future Hall of Fame Player Gilbert Perreault. Perreault would help lead the Sabres to their first two Eastern Conference championships in 1975 and 1980.
After the French connection years, it wouldn't be until the late 1990's and the early 2000's that the Sabres would again be a premier team in the Eastern Conference. Armed with players like Danny Briere, Maxim Afinogenov, Miroslav Satan, and phenomenal goaltender Dominic Hasek, the Sabres would make it to the Stanley Cup finals after winning their third Eastern Conference title in 1999. However, they would be denied the Stanley Cup Trophy again as they lost to the Dallas Stars in the controversial "No Goal" series in six games.
