Other Carolina Teams
There are only two other major professional teams that call the Carolina region home besides the Hurricanes and they are the Panthers and the Bobcats. The Bobcats are based out of Charlotte and are a fairly new addition to the NBA. This team was set up because of the void the NBA left when the Hornets, Charlotte's previous basketball team, moved to New Orleans.
The other major professional sports team in Carolina is the Panthers. The Panthers are also a young team but have had periods of success. Though they have yet to win a Super Bowl title, they did manage to make an appearance in the big game in 2004. Today, the team is known for having one of the best one-two punches from the running back position with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Hurricanes fans did not have to wait long for their new franchise, which was moved to this city from Hartford in 1997, to win a championship. The Hurricanes hoisted their first Stanley Cup trophy in 2006. They have been a good team in the recent seasons and hope to add another Stanley cup to the teams trophy case. Get tickets to RBC Center in Raleigh and watch the Canes dynamo Eric Staal light the lamp again this season.
Carolina Hurricanes History
The team that would eventually become the Carolina Hurricanes was originally founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1972 as a part of the NHL rival, WHA. They would only play in Boston for two seasons as scheduling conflicts for games usually arose because they shared an arena with the Bruins and the Celtics. This team, called the Whalers, was moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1975 and would later join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979.
Once in the NHL, the Hartford Whalers were one of the worse teams in the league. During their time in Hartford, the Whalers only managed to win one playoff series against the Quebec Nordiques in 1986. Following this season, the Whalers would slide back down the standings prompting poor gate showings and a refusal by Connecticut to build the franchise a new stadium. This prompted owners to move the team to Carolina in 1997.
With a new era beginning in Carolina during the 1997-1998 NHL season, owner Peter Karmanos wanted the team to have a fresh start and hopefully reverse the team's fortunes. They would build up over time and start to make the playoffs consistently after the 2000-01 season. It would be in 2006 that this team, armed with players like goaltender Cam Ward, Rod Brind'Amour, and Glen Wesley, would win its first and only Stanley Cup in a rough seven game series over the Edmonton Oilers.
