Other Columbus Teams
As far as professional teams located in Columbus, the Blue Jackets are the only team represented in the big four sports categories. However, there are two smaller market pro teams located in this town. The Columbus Crew are a Major League Soccer team that is hosted by this city and the Columbus Clippers are a triple A baseball team that is a minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
Other than these professional sports, there is one other sporting event that people should see while in Columbus. This sporting event is on Saturdays in the fall at "the" Ohio State University's football field, "the Horseshoe." Ohio State football is the largest sports institutions in the state of Ohio and draws over 100,000 fans per home game. It is always fun to wait in anticipation to see who will be chosen to dot the I.

The Blue Jackets have been accumulating talent very quietly since joining the league in 2000. They made their first appearance in the playoffs in 2009 as a result of the young, fast, and tough team. Though they narrowly missed in 2009-10, get tickets to this up and coming roster to watch them compete in the tough Central Division of the Western Conference.
Columbus Blue Jackets History
After the Cleveland Barons left Ohio, the NHL would be void of a team in this state until the Columbus Blue Jackets played their first game here in 2000. Columbus received a bid for an expansion team in 1997 after Commissioner Gary Bettman visited the city and was assured that an arena could be built. They joined the league alongside the Minnesota Wild as a Western Conference club. They were placed in the ultra competitive Central Division which has caused them to have a slow start to the new franchise.
Because the NHL was undergoing a large expansion during the time when the Blue Jackets were added to the league, they were hard pressed to get a decent team on the ice. Because most of the best young talent had already been taken and was protected by other teams, the Blue Jackets were forced to field a team of young, underdeveloped talent. This lead them to be a less than average team during the first five years of play.
It was in the post lockout era that the Blue Jackets finally took a step in the right direction, making the post season for the first time in 2009. Under Head Coach, Ken Hitchcock, the young team built through trades and draft picks finally made it in to this round through speed and a rough physical play that led them to their best season ever. They got in the playoffs that year in dramatic style winning a shootout to clinch the teams first playoff birth.
