Other Detroit Teams
The Pistons are the NBA affiliate team with this city and have been one of the more successful teams to be hosted by this town. They share the Joe Louis Arena with the Red Wings, who look to rebound from a disappointing performance in 2010.
The Lions are the town's NFL team that hasn't had much to cheer about over the last decade. Since the departure of Barry Sanders, this club as struggled and been at the bottom end of the NFC North Division. However, they have drafted a young core of players that look to turn these bad fortunes around this season. Finally, there are the Tigers, which are the MLB team in Detroit. They have some of the best young hitting and pitching in professional baseball and narrowly missed the playoffs in 2010.

Detroit Red Wings History
As part of the major expansion in 1926, the Detroit Cougars were added to the NHL but played its first season in Ontario as its own arena was not yet completed. They would be an average team during its developmental years as it would take a decade before the team would win its first Stanley Cup. Subsequently, the name had been changed to the Red Wings following a change of ownership in 1932. Once the new moniker was in place, the Red Wings franchise would be built into the greatest American based hockey club in the NHL.
In the 1930's, the Red Wings would start their winning trend by winning three Stanley Cups between 1936 and 1946. This was their first semi golden age that would later lead the team to acquiring one of the greatest hockey players of all time, Gordie Howe. Howe was added to the team in 1946 and four years later would help the franchise start a second period of dominance. Under Gordie, the Red Wings would win four more Stanley Cups in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955. They were perennially one of the best teams in the Western Conference and would remain this way until the late 1960's.
The next period of dominance for Hockeytown U.S.A., as Detroit was called, came in the late 1980's. They started a record unmatched by any other team in North American sports by going to the playoffs for 27 straight seasons, a streak that continued in the 2009-10 season. The Red Wings added four more Stanley Cups on the backs of players like Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, and Chris Osgood. The Red Wings have built themselves up into one of the most dominant teams in the modern era of sports.
