Did you know:
Before the NHL lockout of 2005, the Penguins had the lowest average attendance of any NHL team with just 11,278 fans on average per game?
The Penguins originally wore powder blue, navy blue and white? The colors were changed in January 1980 because Pittsburgh fans wanted it to match the colors of the Steelers and Pirates.
The Penguins franchise had flirted with bankruptcy for nearly 15 years prior to winning their third Stanley Cup? Mario Lemeiux even went ahead and bought the team in bankruptcy court in 1999. When he returned from retirement in 2000, he was the first team owner to also play the game while owning the team.
Other Pittsburgh Teams
The 'burgh is the place for championship sports action! Did you know that Pittsburgh got the nickname of "City of Champions" because it was the only city to have two championship teams in the same year? One team that knows about champions and winning at all costs is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Go to one of their games at Heinz Field and you will meet some of the most unique characters this side of Oakland. Those who want to experience professional baseball might want to look at the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. When it comes to Stanley Cup action, few teams know as much about it as the Pittsburgh Penguins. When Crosby and Malkin go on the ice, you know the arena's gonna boom in a monster vibe of black and gold. Pittsburgh is a City of Champions and they've managed to prove it by rebounding from losing the Cup in 2008 to answer back the next year. What will happen next? Only time will tell. Get your Penguins tickets so you are there as history is being made!
The Pittsburgh Penguins were added as part of the 1967 NHL Expansion, the first ever expansion that included such staple teams as the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues. A state senator named Jack McGregor lobbied to bring a hockey team back to Pittsburgh after their hockey team, the Pirates, left in 1930. Steelers owner Art Rooney used his persuasion to petition two owners, Bruce Norris who owned the Red Wings and James Norris who owned the Blackhawks at the time. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992, the Penguins spent money like wildfire and accrued debt that eventually declared them bankrupt in 1998. The next year, Mario Lemeiux would save the team by using the amount he was due to purchase a stake in the team itself. One of the agreements was that a new arena would be built.
In 2010, a brand new $320 million arena, called the Consol Energy Center, was built to keep the Penguins in the city of Pittsburgh. The new arena featured an 18,084 seating capacity, a 135 room hotel adjacent to the arena and was the first arena to be declared gold certified by the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design organization. Clearly, the future will be something to watch as the Penguins break ground in their new environmentally conscious arena.
